The Conventional Understanding of National Parks in KSA

  1. Established as separate units;

  2. Managed as “islands”;

  3. Set up and run for conservation (not
    for productive use) and scenic
    protection (not ecosystem functioning);

  4. Established in a technocratic way;

  5. Managed by natural scientists and
    natural resource experts;

  6. Established and managed as a means to control the activities of local people, without regard to their needs and without their involvement;

  7. Benefiting primarily visitors, tourists & investors;

The Emerging Understanding of National Parks in KSA

  1. Planned as part of national, regional and international systems;

  2. Managed as elements of networks;

  3. Set up and run for conservation but also for scientific, socio-economic & cultural objectives;

  4. Established as a political act, requiring sensitivity, consultations, and judgment;

  5. Managed by multi-skilled individuals, including some with social skills;

  6. Established and run with, for, and in some cases by local people;

  7. Benefiting primarily the local communities who assume the opportunity costs of conservation
